Linyanti Explorations

THE SELINDA

The Best African Experiences . . . in the Best Places to be . . .

The Selinda is a private wildlife concession located in Botswana's northern Kwando/Linyanti Wildlife Management Area. Our operations are focused along the Selinda Spillway, a watercourse linking the Okavango Delta to the Linyanti Swamps. Here, a private wildlife reserve, known as "The Selinda", covers some 1350 square kilometres. Our camps are small and personal, where a handful of guests can experience a big game safari in the finest African tradition.

  •  With the dry season now at its peak, game viewing is also at the season’s best. This has been spectacularly enhanced by the abundance of localised fresh water we are experiencing this year.
  • Predator viewing has been mostly focused on the lions this month. The new males seem to be well settled & established now so mating has featured strongly in our sightings. We hope that over the next 3-4 months we see a fresh batch of cubs coming through, & that they get a chance to survive!
  •  We had two sad lion deaths during the month. The first was the killing of a cub by a nomadic male – right at Zibalianja Camp (see www.linyanti.com/campnews.htm for the full story). The second was the death from old age of one of the Selinda lionesses. Despite this, a number of lactating lionesses indicates that the cycle of birth & death continues amongst our lions.
  •  It is confirmed – our star leopard, Amber, is indeed a proud mum! Originally seen with 2 cubs, it seems that she has lost one. The survivor though is doing exceptionally well & we have been fortunate to see them together on numerous occasions – once with dad in attendance on an impala kill.
  • Possibly one of the best leopard sightings of the month was the chance to follow a male leopard (Amber’s mate) for some time as he ambled down the road. His somewhat nonchalant nature suddenly changed as he spotted something we couldn’t see. The next thing he pounced on & killed an African Wild Cat. All this in broad daylight!
  • After a prolonged leave of absence, the “2 Boys” are back! These two remarkable cheetahs are once again drinking from Zib’s waterhole & resting up at their old haunts. As the floodplains become increasingly crowded with antelope, we expect to see plenty of action from this dynamic duo.
  • Our “rare” animal sightings are becoming increasingly common!? A Pangolin was again sighted near the site of Old Selinda, & Aardvarks are frequently encountered now on the night drives. The need for water has also seen the arrival of more Roan & Sable – 2 of Africa’s larger, & less common, antelope.
  • Please note! Both Kuda & Grant will be attending WTM in London next month (6-9 Nov). Grant will be stationed on the Classic Safari Camps of Africa stand (AF4450), & Kuda will be on the Botswana stand (AF1200). Appointments are welcome, indeed encouraged, & can be made through Kuda at info@linyanti.com
